10- year-old Mario Balbo of Naples was killed when he was shot in the chest by a stray bullet on Sunday night in the city of Rimini.
Mario was one of the children in the school with his parents, who were in the area when the incident took place.
The children were outside playing outside when a stray shot struck Mario in the neck.
The family then ran outside to find Mario lying on the ground with a bullet lodged in his chest.
Mario’s father, Roberto Balbo, said his son had just left for school when the shooting took place and that the bullet had been removed from his chest as soon as he came back inside.
“I saw Mario on the floor, with the bullet still lodged in him,” he said.
“The doctor has said the bullet came out from his right ear.
It was a bullet in his stomach.
He is very lucky.”
Mario’s mother, Mariana, said the boy’s father had been a police officer for 10 years and had a “very good relationship” with police.
Mario Balba was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Police said they were investigating whether the shooting was an accident.
“We are not ruling out the possibility that Mario may have been targeted by criminals,” police said in a statement.
Mario died on Sunday evening.
